Dickenson County Wireless Integrated Network
DCWIN currently provides internet service to over three hundred customers, including the E-911 and Emergency Services for Dickenson County, Dickenson
County School System, Lonesome Pine Regional Libraries in Dickenson County, and state and local government offices. These services are provided via ten
existing tower infrastructures and the Haysi Fiber Network, which is maintained by DCWIN.
The DCWIN Network is a secure internet service. DCWIN provides a firewall at each of the customer's locations and can provide HEPA compliant systems to
those who may need that type of protection. The DCWIN web mail server includes anti-virus and anti-spam protection for end users.
The DCWIN security system has been approved by the Virginia State Police regarding the E-911 department. DCWIN has the only contract with the state of
Virginia to provide VCIN and NCIC. A mock disaster was organized with employees from the National Guard. They were unable to break into the DCWIN network.
This type of protection is guaranteed for every DCWIN user.
Having high speed internet access in Dickenson County opens many doors to advanced means of communication. DCWIN is able to support services such as
Teleconferencing and Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Video conferencing allows businesses that are distances apart to have a visual conversation. This service
cuts down on travel time and expenses that are incurred from face to face meetings. Virtual Private Network's are another important service that will encourage
development i the county. VPN's allow companies to connect local facilities to remote corporate offices, enabling professionals to work from home if necessary.
DCWIN also enhances the quality of education for our children; such as enrollment in Governor's School and Fiber Optic Classes. Students from other countries
can enroll in classes taught by teachers in Dickenson County. DCWIN provides a way for customers with demanding schedules to enroll in online courses to further
their education.
